The purchased version of Video Download Helper allows me to download videos from many sites that are unresponsive to the free version, and the interface is more user friendly than its free counterpart. I still use a different downloader for YouTube videos, so it is still not a 'universal' site downloader; however it is definitely worth the cost to upgrade to the paid v.10 or higher.
